Minor Atom AE - Year End Summary
Hockey seasons go by so fast.  It feels like only yesterday the coaching staff were learning the boy’s names and getting to know them.  The team was selected in May of 2018 with a lot of players not playing in a Rep program before.  Summer quickly passed and practices began in August leading to September early bird tournaments and season play.

As a Minor Atom AE team, we had plenty of hurdles.  From having to play against Minor Atom ‘A’ teams or playing Atom AE boys a year older, we were always going to have to bring our ‘A’ game to the rink.  The boys were up to the challenge as we knew our goal to compete at tournaments, playdowns and playoffs was an obtainable goal.  If people compare our play from September to our play in March, the difference is remarkable!

Tournaments:  A semi-final appearance in our first tournament together placed high hopes for the boys.  They did not disappoint.  They followed up the early bird tournament by playing in the SCMHA Ace Bailey tournament.  The boys were quickly bound to the gold medal match after winning an exciting 1v1 overtime round robin win.  Finding themselves down by two goals in the third period, the boys learned a very valuable lesson – NEVER QUIT.   The game was quickly tied up and won in overtime in another 1v1 battle bringing home their first team gold and tournament banner.

Playdowns:  The Warriors were ready.  We obtained victories and heartbreaking defeats including 2 overtime losses.   But in all games, we came to play!  The boys represented SCMHA with pride and played to their full potential.   Did we advance? – No.  Did we succeed? – Absolutely YES!  The players throughout the season learned how to play as a team, and it showed during all of the playdown games.

Playoffs: Going back to league playoff playoffs was going to be exciting.  We learned how to play for entire games, learned to battle every game, learned how to play as a team and had fun doing it.  This showed in playoff round robin play as we advanced to the championship Final!  The boys played hard in every game of the series.  All three of the Championship games were one goal games or ended in a tie.  The boys hard work was again rewarded with a silver medal.

Visiting teams, other rinks, parents, grandparents, executive always knew when we were playing – “WHO ARE WE?” would echo in the arenas.  “WARRIORS” was the boy’s response!  We were 17 players/goalies and 4 coaches.  We won together, we lost together.
