U15 Local League #2 took part in the Stoney Creek Local League Winterfest tournament over the Family Day long weekend and earned the gold medal (their third medal of the season, 2 golds and a silver in total).
The boys were 3-0 in round robin play over Friday and Saturday, with wins over Stoney Creek #1, Centre Wellington Fergus Blues, and Welland Tigers #1. This sent them to the semi-final elimination round in first place, for a rematch against the Centre Wellington Fergus Blues. A 6-1 win in that game sent them to a home-town final against Stoney Creek #1.
The teams were well matched for this game - Team 2 scored first, but Team 1 did not allow us to open much of a lead as the score was quickly tied at 1. We regained the lead, only to be caught again at 2-2. In the third period, we were able to open a 4-2 lead. With a late penalty and the Team 1 goalie on the bench, they were able to narrow the gap to 4-3 on a 6 on 4 with 90 seconds left in the game. Finally, however, we were able to hold off their 6 on 5 push and bury the empty-netter for a 5-3 championship win - definitely an excellent final, and congratulations to Team 1 for a well-fought silver medal!
